AMINE MESNAOUI & LABELLE – “BLEU NOIR”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
“Bleu Noir” (light blue, related to the ocean and the sky) is taken from the debut Long player African Prayers, a collection of seven new compositions that aims to bring a contemporary and fresh interpretation to the Lila Ritual of the Moroccan Gnawa masters – also known as the Ritual of the Seven Colors.
With a firm belief they can deliver a sound that finds its anchor in heritage and yet escape folkloric clichΓ©s and stereotypes, the two musicians have strived to make something that is rich in meanings, minimal but complex, simple but deep. This is a record that is universal and invites the listener to the depth of meditation, to the dance, even to the spiritual state of trance.
ARTIST QUOTE
“‘Bleu Noir’ is both the first song we wrote for the album and the last one we finished. In the album’s context it is the moment of joy and healing after going through the forest and its sounds in ‘ForΓͺt’ and the experience of the shamanic dance of KrazΓ© muneataf. ‘Bleu Noir’ evokes the very poetic moment after sunset when the sky and ocean take on a magical colour between blue and black. In the Morocco of my childhood this is the moment when new sounds, colours and smells emerge in the city. A new life begins. This piece is our interpretation of the blue colour of the Gnawa ritual which symbolises water, the ocean and its people.”
