“Base Sick” started with just a wildly catchy bass synth line written by Bevan. Cheryl formulated some verses around that groove and developed a B section. It quickly became evident that the song was going to be about a woman who had recently passed away in their small mountain community from an overdose. In a short time at her downtown job Cheryl witnessed this woman descend into a harrowing journey of destruction and chaos under the haze of addiction. The music reflects the fleeting highs and crushing lows of a life lived on the edge. Bevan had said to Cheryl sometime back that he wanted their next video to tell a story. Cheryl knew this song was the one where she could do just that.
