SPILL VIDEO PREMIERE: JAMES IRWIN – “CARLO WHAT DO YOU DREAM”

James Irwin, Montreal/Toronto balladeer, describes this low-fi gamer style video as follows:
“This is an animation created by Carlo Spidla, my long, lifetime friend, the very Carlo from the song. (Find the song on Said the Gramophone’s best songs of 2017!) I like to think the video is Carlo’s answer, a couple years later, to the question the song poses. Carlo, what do you dream? Turns out he dreamt of learning animation and game design. So he did—he’s learning, he started a little company—and here’s the actual first thing he made, a video for my song about him. Duff Smith, a humble, rawdog, amazing film editor and dear pal, generously edited the video for payment in rapini farfalle and beer.
The video is a small sendup to some spots and people in Montreal…my dirty old apartment, one of our dearest friends no longer with us, and some well-known-and-loved spots like Five Roses, the Big Orange, the 40, Bar le Ritz PDB. Locals will recognize animated versions of the band: Pat Bass Latreille, Michael Feuerstack, Pietro Amato, Jeffrey Malecki on skins, myself in my red, and invisibly, Stef Schneider, who actually drums on the recording.”

“The song is about getting hung up on a particular way of being in the world and needing to go. This can happen anywhere to anyone, of course, but for both Carlo and me, leaving Montreal proved to be a swift way to lose our blues. That’s really the theme of the whole Shabbytown album…feeling the end of one life, feeling the snake skin crack, and needing to move or wither up. It’s sad to me that I had to leave. I love Montreal with all my heart…like I love my youth, like I love my exes, like I love my oldest friends. I think Carlo feels similarly, or at least he didn’t mind me projecting my feelings on him. We’re close enough, I don’t worry.”
