There just might be some strange brews they drink over in Norway, as more often than not that you would hear some intriguing sounds coming from those fjords over there, at the same time combining seemingly familiar with bits of left-field, yet still sounding as they are in a perfect place.

The case this time around is Sculptures From Under the City Ice, the third solo album by guitarist Christian Winther, who straddles quite a wide terrain here, combining Sparklehorse reveries with guitar excursions akin to those of Gastr Del Sol or J. Mascis, making such a combination as something fully natural.

His intricate songwriting and a singing voice that match each other, make a combination that can easily be labeled as electric weird folk, and no matter how strange that may sound. It works as a charm, with the celebrated jazz/noise musician and producer Lasse Marhaug coming up with a crystalline sound with Winther’s guitar shining throughout. Works like a charm all the way.
