A CONVERSATION WITH BECKY BLACK OF THE PACK A.D.

For Becky Black, the Pack A.D.’s latest album, Dollhouse (dropping October 13^th) is part statement on the unnerving world around us and part strange experimentation. Talking with Becky, she almost immediately points out the fact that not only are we living in politically dangerous times, our climate is being destroyed and a whole host of other worries are plaguing the earth.  Dollhouse brings the listener to terms with this reality in all its dark, psychedelic glory.

When asked how the band’s sound has changed, Becky admits it’s hard for her to see objectively. They write songs the way they always have: melody first followed by vocal tracks of Becky singing “lalala” over the sound of her guitar and band mate Maya Miller’s drums. Lyrics are almost always the last thing to come for this dynamic two piece, who split song writing fairly close to 50/50. Where Dollhouse differs however is the speed at which it came together.

PURCHASE DOLLHOUSE

Different from previous records, Dollhouse came together in a short two months. Full of fire, anger, love and plenty of strange distorted guitar sounds, “this album feels much more cohesive (than past ones)” Black says. This is demonstrated through a common, futuristic meets garage rock sound that melts the entire project together. This glue is no better demonstrated than on the mid-album track “March of the Martians”, an instrumental number that Black says was inspired by the sounds from War of the Worlds. 

 Cohesion aside, fans catching shows on the Dollhouse tour can expect the same thing that Pack A.D. has always delivered according to Black: “a show where two people will play incredibly loud in front of you”.   If what Black says is true, then fans are in for a treat. Their no-holds, energetic performances, combined with the bizarrely remarkable and beautiful sounds on Dollhouse, means something pretty extraordinary is to come.
