JOHN FLANAGAN TRIO – “SOMETHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT”
A Spill Exclusive Video Premiere
“Something To Complain About” is the second single from upcoming album Honest Man by John Flanagan Trio, and is driven by punchy harmonies and rollicking fiddle. Bluegrass/Folk meets Rock’N’Roll as Flanagan takes a light-hearted poke at ‘first world problems’ and the art of complaining. Fast becoming a favourite on the Australian Folk Festival circuit, the John Flanagan Trio features award winning songwriter, John Flanagan; charismatic double bass player Liz Frencham and virtuoso guitar and mandolin picker Daniel Watkins. Honest Man zoom from local to universal themes: awkward new love, lingering lost love, our changing environment, kindling young minds. While the lyrics are speckled with Australiana, the musical arrangements bring a contemporary edge to Americana traditions with bluegrass, country, blues and jazzy influences all adding colour to the band’s folky palette.
Artist Quote
“We had so much fun making the video for ‘Something To Complain About’. Recording it as one continuous shot was a last minute decision and it really brought the video to life and made it feel like an ‘ensemble’ performance. Recording it in this way also made the process very similar to our audio recording experience for the album: We performed all together as a group until we got a take we were happy with. This process allows for a great energy and connection between the performers.
It turns out that even the actors in the music video are well-established Melbourne musicians in their own right: Kris Schroeder (The Basics), Andrew Kitchen (Anti-Skeptic), Sophie Klein (Little Wise), Beth King (Beth & the Brave), Paddy Montgomery (Mustered Courage, Davidson Brothers). This wasn’t planned, they just happened to be the ones to answer the call to be part of the day.”
