SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: BELLE AND SEBASTIAN – WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN SUMMER

Belle And Sebastian

Belle And Sebastian
What To Look For In Summer
Matador Records

Those that did not have the chance to see Belle and Sebastian live might question how both their musically and lyrically intricate material would transfer to a live performance. Those that did, particularly the ones that were able to be present at one of their 2019 tour performances, most probably don’t. They sound great and as intricate and beautiful as ever. For those doubting that, here comes What To Look For In Summer, a double album of choice live performances from that tour.

Everything there is as any Belle and Sebastian fan can wish for – the sound shows all the nuances both in the music and lyrics Stuart Murdoch and others in the band came up with up to that moment. To do that, they selected the best performances from different shows, as to make it the best possible representation. In that manner, the dual set is in many ways a recap what Belle and Sebastian have done so far, as it includes some of their best-known songs. As a bonus, the band have thrown in an additional track, “Funny Little Frog”, recorded at Montreal’s MTelus studio.

Besides those already converted, this double live affair can serve as a perfect way in for those who aren’t yet.
