A conflagration of alternative rock both high obtain and restrained, where stab-you-in-your nose bone guitars meet cubist refractions of soul and R&B, The album comes in the year of their 40th anniversary as well as a major US tour through April-May (with another to be announced and follow in the fall) and previous single releases “House Of I,” “Duvateen” and “Jungle Roux” have been met with high praise from the likes of The LA Times, Rolling Stone, SPIN, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Pitchfork, Pollstar, Consequence and more.
This critically acclaimed Cincinnati alt-rock band, who have fans ranging from Usher to Olivia Rodrigo – formed by jamming in the basements and rundown clubs of mid-’80s Cincinnati. In the intervening years there were two celebrated stints on Sub Pop and a classic trilogy (Gentlemen, Black Love, and 1965) that explains why Pitchfork once described the Whigs as “one of the few alt-bands to flourish on a major label in the 1990s.” There was a hiatus, during which Dulli’s side projects flourished (The Twilight Singers and The Gutter Twins with the late Mark Lanegan), and then the band returned in the 2000s with a series of critically acclaimed albums: Do to the Beast (2014), In Spades (2017), and How Do You Burn? (2022). Throughout, the band has remained distinct and dangerous, purveyors of the unexpected cover song (see their version of TLC’s “Creep”) and with their tenth album The Afghan Whigs are perhaps at their most bold and reflective yet.
