SALIM NOURALLAH – “THE SOUND OF SUFFERING”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
Singer-songwriter/producer Salim Nourallah is set to release his new single, “The Sound of Suffering,” on February 24, 2023 viaΒ Happiness (A Record Label)/State Fair Records. The song, premiering exclusively here today at Spill Magazine with its accompanying video, is the first single from Nourallah’s forthcoming album, A Nuclear Winter, which is due out in June 23, 2023. The album, and its predecessor companion EP, See You in Marfa, are the result of a collaboration between Nourallah and British guitarist/songwriter/producer Marty Willson-Piper, who spent over 30 years in the Australian band The Church. (Willson-Piper continues to perform, produce, and prolifically record since parting ways with the band.) Nourallah is a Texan (based in Dallas) who has spent many years releasing solo records and touring Europe as well as producing a vast array of other artists; Rhett Miller and Old 97’s sit atop the list of Nourallah’s production credits. “The Sound of Suffering” fits with a very loose narrative thread about negative inner thoughts found on A Nuclear Winter. “I believe we all can get to a place where we’re able to observe our own thoughts and choose which ones to engage with, rather than being sucked into every single one,” says Nourallah. Tapping into his more rock ‘n’ roll side, the song is a buoyant rock-pop gem, shiny bright and driven by electric guitar and Nourallah’s Tom Petty-esque vocals.
ARTIST QUOTE
“The Sound of Suffering” was inspired by an ex who just couldn’t seem to manage turning off the constant onslaught of negativity in her own head. Those thoughts ended up doing quite a bit of damage to her life and our relationship. It was ultimately kind of tragic. But the song itself is a rocking wake up call or plea to snap out of it! Musically, it’s in no way a mope fest. The video is a collage of sorts – clips culled from various sources over the years. The video treatment was my idea. I wanted to give the viewer a sense of the shared history we all have playing music together over the years. It’s a celebration of sorts. The whole thing was put together and edited by me and my drummer, John Dufilho, with the studio footage largely shot by Olivia Willson-Piper. Some of the various live clips over the years were shot by my son, Gavin, who was just a kid at the time.” ~Salim Nourallah
