LALA HAYDEN RELEASES NEW SINGLE “BEAST” | NEW EP VIVA VENUS OUT NOW
LALA LAND
London/Barcelona-based alt-pop singer-songwriter LALA HAYDEN have released new single ‘beast’ – completing her new EP viva venus – out now.
Working with producer Ben Christophers (Bat For Lashes, Françoise Hardy) on its creation, LALA HAYDEN’s new EP viva venus deftly explores love in a digital age. Rooted in the glistening landscape of synth-pop, LALA has woven a sonic tapestry that consistently defies expectation.
Forging her own distinctive identity across the EP’s four tracks, LALA subtly nods to influence ranging from the vibrant energy of Robyn and Róisín Murphy to the sophisticated pop sensibilities of Ladyhawke, Self Esteem, Donna Summer, Jessie Ware, and Lykke Li.
New single and EP closer ‘beast’ offers up the EP’s most euphoric pop moment. A cathartic yet vulnerable musical reckoning with past self-doubt and codependency, LALA ultimately arrives at a powerful affirmation of self-worth.
Speaking on the release of new track ‘beast’ – LALA said:
“I knew ‘beast’ had to go on the EP from day 1. I’m usually quite bratty in my delivery, I think it feels more comfortable for me to exist in that realm. One of the contributing factors to me feeling disconnected is I feel like social media is pushing us to extremes even more. It’s all about being a “brand”, and I fear that it doesn’t leave much room for the complexity of human existence. ‘beast’ felt like a moment where all my guards are down and I show you inside of my head on a down day. It felt important to explore this vulnerability and allow that side of me to be seen.”
The EP opens with live-favourite, ‘honeymoon suite’. Co-written with Sam McTrusty & Ross McNae of Twin Atlantic and ex-Anteros bandmate Jackson Couzens, the song captures the paradox of escaping into love to avoid the darkness within; “a dark and sweet, lovesick toxic lullaby” as LALA describes herself.
On ‘baby you’re the best!’, LALA delves into the themes of emotional neglect, delivered through a spiralling haze of electro-pop, with the EP completed by the dance-floor pulse of ‘rush of love’. Made in conjunction with bassist Armin Metz (Imogen Heap), LALA blends sparkling synths and pulsating percussion – recalling a question she posed to producer Ben Christophers whilst in the studio – “what would it sound like if Madonna’s Confessions on a Dancefloor met Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love?”.
Speaking more on the themes at play within her new EP, LALA said:
“My music is always a love letter to a female archetype, in this case it was Venus – the goddess of love, sex, fertility and victory. I wanted to explore this side to women in today’s world. ‘viva venus’ is an ode to modern love. The theme across the EP is love in a digital age. I feel like it has changed the paradigm for relationships, both in how we engage with ourselves but also our surroundings. It feels like 24/7 thrill seeking or looking for the next best thing. I didn’t realise when I came up with the title that I’d be releasing her on the last day of Venus in Retrograde. Astrologically speaking I’ve been told it is a time to reflect on & reimagine relationships, both outside & the one with yourself.”
With early tastemaker press support from NME, Dork Magazine, DIY Magazine, The Line of Best Fit, and Ones To Watch, LALA has also solidified herself as a fascinating proposition on the live stage in recent months – with key festival appearances at Eurosonic, The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City, Beyond The Music & more.
Alongside her music, LALA created a coaching platform for women in 2023 – with those two worlds colliding within her songwriting. Themes of womanhood, female empowerment; self love and interdependence are explored with passion and purpose, with her lyrics and unique live performances conveying strength and confidence, as she told Vogue – “The goal of my music is to make you walk with your back a little straighter, your chest a little more open and your head a little higher”.
