THE WOMACK SISTERS PROUDLY ANNOUNCE THEIR SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM COMING AUGUST 14 | SHARE NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO “CHAUFFEUR”
DAPTONE RECORDS
Roll out the red carpet for the long-awaited debut album from The Womack Sisters. Coming out on Daptone Records on August 14th, The Womack Sisters is a well-earned triumph for the Sisters and their tenacity, announced today alongside the release of their debut single “Chauffeur” and accompanying music video. Preceding the album announcement was “You Went Away Too Long,” which arrived around the news that The Womack Sisters would join Thee Sacred Souls and LA LOM for their ambitious, 29-date summer amphitheater run, The Constellation Tour. On release day, the sisters will also play a special show with Al Green at the Hollywood Bowl.
On “Chauffeur,” Zeimani, BG, and Kucha recount the trials and tribulations they each faced while trying to make rent as Uber drivers. In their respective verses, they recount the horror stories of drunken passengers, spilling wine, and heavy petting in their backseats, and grapple with the futility of trying to stack meager fares into rent money: How many miles do I have to burn? How many corners do I have to turn? …Just to keep my place? There are no flowery metaphors here. This song is about the real struggles people are facing to survive everyday. The raw emotion in the Sisters’ pleas is matched note for note by the orchestration: the seething fury of the brass, the pleading desperation of the strings, and the endlessly driving swagger of the rhythm section. A discerning ear may even decipher the actual car horns blasting behind the blinding rage of the backgrounds’ refrain: Drive!
Classic sounds conveying contemporary feelings plays a big role in The Womack Sisters as a body of work. Rather than compromise their style or their subject matters to conform to industry ideals, the Womack Sisters stuck to their guns, placing their faith in the soul music that raised them since before they could walk. Over an intensely soulful collection of tunes that harkens back to when pop music had substance, vibe and purpose, each of their distinct voices have their moments in the spotlight.
Kucha, the youngest of the Womacks and a mother of two, has a pure soulful tone, with a gritty sweetness that betrays her Curtis Mayfield and Smokey Robinson influences. Her performance of “I Am Your Season,” a dreamy Impressions-tinged ballad penned by Wayne Gordon, is a highlight of the album that she delivers with a near-saintly love and tenderness.
Zeimani’s voice is rich, full, and sultry, and always laced with rhythm. On “Didn’t Mean Much to Me,” her cool veneer betrays a passionate and vulnerable soul as she showcases her ability to creep from a moan to a squall with silky smoothness.
BG’s voice seems boundless in its power and range. On features such as “Monster” and “I Just Don’t Want You (To Say Goodbye),” she summons her grandfather’s uncanny ability to move between the cleanest pop runs and the bluesiest gospel growls without compromising either.
Their sound may be most remarkable when their three voices become one instrument, as on “Chauffeur,” “You Went Away Too Long,” and “Laughter and Tears,” playfully trading leads and blossoming into perfectly blended harmonies as only sisters can. But on an album that is deeply autobiographical, perhaps no lyric is as fitting as the final refrain:
People come and go, But, darling this I know,
It will always be my sisters and me.
