MV WELLS – “SPECTRUM BOY”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
MV WELLS is a Midwestern singer-songwriter whose genre-spanning work is tied together by a singular skill for melody and an uncanny knack for creating memorable hooks. Listeners may know his unique pop sensibility from the 2010s Chicago indie rock group Ne-Hi, the country-rock group Flamingo Rodeo, or his more recent work with psychedelic new wave collective Spun Out. Wells has spent the last decade in the Chicago music scene, touring the United States, and opening for bands such as Dinosaur Jr., Whitney, the Black Lips, and Twin Peaks. He’s played the big stage at the now-defunct Pitchfork Music Festival, the rock clubs of downtown Chicago, and the remote taverns of his native Wisconsin. With his solo debut, Wells brings his love for the Great American Songbook and the orchestral pop of Burt Bacharach, the Beach Boys, and Harry Nilsson into the forefront — along with a biting wit and lyrical sneer that echoes a musical apprenticeship based in underground American music.
ARTIST QUOTE
“I wanted to make a kind of humanist gospel song. I wanted to do something that felt universal and uplifting, but that can be tied to anyone’s own experiences. Music is the closest thing to religion for me. You don’t have to be in line with spirituality to feel that yearning when listening to a song that makes you feel otherworldly. That’s what I was trying to get across in the song — a kind of universal human-ness that makes people want to get involved in life and realize they have the power! A sort of personal cosmic gospel tune.”
“This single was inspired by gospel music, Tommy James and the Shondells, and the motorik nature of the work of Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom. I wanted to create a futuristic call-and-response marching hymn for the 21st century.” ~Michael Wells
