CHARLOTTE CORNFIELD
HURTS LIKE HELL
NEXT DOOR RECORDS/MERGE RECORDS

Big life changes impact everybody, but such changes are more visible, or to be precise, more audible with musicians. Motherhood is one such big change in life, and it had its individual impact on singer-songwriter Charlotte Cornfield, as her sixth album Hurts Like Hell tells us.
Yet are these changes for the better or for the worse? From the first notes played and sung, you can sense not only maturity, but also a shift in vocal and lyrical direction that took place. Cornfield now sings in a higher vocal register, something that is always more demanding on singers, and it suits her music so well here.
At the same time, caring for an infant brings along a shift in perspective – you simply cannot remain focused mainly on yourself but on other people around you, and Cornfield now becomes more of a storyteller than an introspective observer. All these changes, coupled with excellent musical backup give us the qualities Cornfield already had, but also something new that has additionally enriched her music.
