MESSER CHUPS
DON’T WORRY, BE CREEPY
GUITARACULA RECORDS/HI-TIDE & NU-TONE RECORDINGS

Messer Chups debuted in 2004 with the album, Vamp Babies. Nearly 21 years later, the punk band from St. Petersburg, Russia has released a number of albums and EPs. Don’t Worry, Be Creepy is their new EP, following last year’s album, Dark Side Of Paradise. The band continues to do what they do best and have come up with five very energetic songs that combine great guitar-based surf music from the 1960s with a hint of cow-punk.
Messer Chups consists of Oleg Guitaracula who plays guitar, writes, and produces the songs, Zombierella (bass) and Mattia Bertolassi (drums).
The opening song, “Kiss Of The Night” invokes a little bit of “Peter Gunn” and it is quite a laid back instrumental that manages to keep the listener tuned in to their sound. “Big Foot’s Shadow”, on the other hand, brings some fine Tex-Mex instrumental rock to the forefront with a bit of 1950s ‘B’ horror films. You can actually feel the dust in your face. The song also features Evan Foster (of Boss Martians) on second guitarist.
Fans may want to take note that there is a terrific bonus track available through Bandcamp, “The Souvenir Of The Witch”, which makes it the best version of the EP to order. It is a welcome addition as it does add one more song to a far too short EP.
Don’t Worry, Be Creepy is a well played and well produced EP. The songs are well constructed twang, sort of surf rock. Or twang rock, or whatever word one wants to use. The bottom line is that it is a fun album full of excitement. It is interesting and never becomes boring. Each has their distinct sound, but each song is different enough to keep things interesting. Once you tie in the horror film references in their titles and presentation, it is really hard not to love.
