After years on the scene, four previous albums, numerous collaborations and singles, you just might be turning a new leaf if you are releasing your fifth album as a self-titled one, and for the first time at that.
That is exactly what New York quartet Lucius is doing, and there just might be some good reasons for that new leaf concept, which in this case is returning to your roots and coming up with some elegant melody-oriented pop (rock) without too much input by others (the only two guests are Adam Granduciel and Madison Cunningham) focusing thematically on some personal topics akin to Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.
Anything wrong with that? Absolutely not, and the band shouldn’t be bothered with comparisons, as their songwriting is detailed and meticulous here, debunking the notion of some critics that all pop is simple, and at the same time, presentation matches the songwriting.
Excellent music remains that, whether it is pop, rock, or any other genre or subgenre, and this album certainly qualifies.
