Marlody
I’m Not Sure At All
Skep Wax
British singer songwriter Marlody named her album I’m Not Sure at All. Ok, there’s elements within her lyrics here that you might consider that are elements of personal insecurity.
Yet, Marlody’s songwriting, subdued vocals, and incredibly detailed, secure if you will, piano playing maybe do not speak of security, but definitely speak of an upcoming talent that deserves full attention.
The influences can only be glimpsed; starting out as a classical pianist she obviously moved to more pop/rock pastures, with musical influences as varied as Kate Bush and Fleetwood Mac cropping up throughout the album.
Lyrically, she also goes deep, from the debilitating effects of psychiatric medication (“Words”) to a childβs point of view, describing the beginnings of new life after the loss of a parent (first single “Summer”). Some heavy subject matter there, but Marlody tackles them valiantly, combining them with her excellent keyboards and vocals, varying the song arrangements throughout.
A bit early to discuss best debuts of the year, but one to be seriously considered, for sure.
