LOST SIGNAL
LIGHT OF OTHER DAYS
METROPOLIS RECORDS

Light of Other Days is the fourth album of Charles Rehill and Lost Signal. It is a rather quick follow-up to 2024’s Anatomy of Melancholy. With Light of Other Days, Rehill takes a much sparser and almost stripped-down route to make some very interesting sounds and songs. This is electronic music that is not really made for dancing. It is a moody, dark album, albeit with very melodic songs.
The album opens with “Departure,” which serves as the introduction. The song employs a Twilight Zone vibe done with synthesizers. There are some interesting sound effects, and it draws the listener in for the rest of the album. This leads into “Dream Within A Dream,” a rather haunting and powerful song with a title borrowed from Edgar Allan Poe. The original poem’s theme about loss is not lost on Rehill. Only here, the loss is a bit more terrifying.
“Fear Of Death” is self-explanatory, but in Rehill’s hands, it is not so much fear as experiencing deprivation “The places I wanted to visit / The foreign shores I’ll never see” is an impactful observation. It is the finality of it all for Rehill, but then he struggles with the question, is it really final? Before the song “Return,” the song “Entropy” takes the listener through things really falling apart and decaying.
Light of Other Days is a brilliant album. Rehill uses the synthesizer and other keyboards in the same way Hendrix used his guitar. The instrument provides the appropriate background and soundtrack for the theme and lyrics of the album. His emotion is in the instrumentation more than in his vocals, which work perfectly by the way. Light of Other Days is a strong album that does bring the listener into some uncomfortable discussions and observations, however, the dark trip into these landscapes is well worth the effort and time.
