Frances Chang
Support Your Local Nihilist
Independent

It might be quite a task to locate New York artist Frances Chang on social media. One of the reasons might be that she is not a big fan of it. The other that so far, Chang has assumed and then discarded quite a few artistic pseudonyms as a punker.
Now, she releases her solo debut album, Support Your Local Nihilist, under her own name. The title might point in the direction of her punk past, but essentially, it is more an indicator why she changed a few aliases.
You see, Chang, simply does not stand still in one (musical) place, moving all over the spectrum from psychedelia to bedroom pop and elsewhere where her musical fancy takes her.
In many cases such a kaleidoscopic approach can spell a disaster in lesser hands, but Chang has both the imagination and the capabilities to pull successfully through all the musical changes she literally plays with here. Whether it is the title track, or the harmony jazz of “i quit cigs’ or anything else of the languid tempo material she presents here, Chang turns out as a master of musical changes, on this achingly brief album.
