SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: 1st BASE RUNNER – ELLIS

1st Base Runner

1st BASE RUNNER
ELLIS
INDEPENDENT

Austin Texas electro-rocker Tim Husmann, aka 1st Base Runner has been on quite a roll this year. After two singles and a mini-album, Seven Years of Silence, he made a few videos with Matt Mahurin, who directed Tom Waits videos, among others, and Radiohead creative director Dilly Gent. To continue on that roll, Husmann is now coming up with Ellis, another EP, a collaboration with his longtime friend Bryan Ellis.

After this series of releases, it becomes a bit clearer in which direction Husmann is heading. You may call it electro shoegaze if you will, trying to squeeze together the song structure of say My Bloody Valentine with the experimental electro pioneers like UNKLE (after all, one of the singles was the reworking of UNKLE’s “Rabbit In Your Headlights”) with touches of post-rock (you can take your pick there) for good measure.

While on Seven Years of Silence the sound was all mood pieces, on Ellis Husmann (and Ellis) take a bit more upbeat tones, without abandoning that moody vibe that gave his previous releases that specific tone. What is most audible is that the quality of Husmann’s songwriting is still on the rise and even better things to come might be expected of him.
