EVER-LOVIN’ JUG BAND – “WHAT’S THAT WOW?!”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE VIDEO PREMIERE
Ever-Lovin’ Jug Band answers the question what would a one-gallon jug bass sound like in ’50s rock-n-roll, psychedelic, garage, jazz, and wall-of-sound songs on its new album Move That Thing‘ out July 19 via Jalopy Records. Everything on the album was written, arranged, played, sung, recorded, and produced by just the two members of the Ever-Lovin’ Jug Band, a duo made up of Minnie Heart and Bill Howard. In addition to a jug on every track, sounds include baritone sax, heavy percussion, drum sets, soaring string sections, tape delay, wild textures, sonic vistas, and backwards effects. All but two of the songs feature dual lead vocals, where both Howard and Heart sing in unison, to create a double-tracked vocal effect, combining their voices into one, on top of loads of backup vocals, giving it a warm, thick sound. In addition to their own recordings made via vintage tape machines,
ARTIST QUOTE
“Wonder, what is that wow? That’s Move That Thing, ain’t it?” That’s the opening line to the Memphis Jug Band’s 1930 song “Move That Thing.” That’s where both the title for our album and for this song come from. Asking “what is that wow?” is a popular interjection among contemporary jug band practitioners while playing the classics. This song is full of classic jug band references, like “vo-vo-vo-dee-oh,” “round and round”, and “relax your mind.” It was written as a pretty traditional-sounding jug band tune, but as the album developed, we mutated it into its current form. It’s basically about how jug band music can cure your various woes, and how everybody loves jug band music, even if they haven’t realized it. This is a hot summery tune to wobble and relax to during this hot, hot Summer of Jug. The song features dual lead vocals, 3 backups, 3 baritone saxes, drums, upright bass, electric guitar, and a big fat jug holding it all together. The video stems from our love of ’90s fisheye lens videos, like Beastie Boys and skateboarding videos, and it features The Wiggler wiggling around on his surf skateboard in the skate park before the lame city paid some loud guy to erase all the cute graffiti.” ~Minnie Heart and Bill Howard
