SPECTRES UNVEIL NEW SINGLE “CHAIN REACTION”
FORTHCOMING ALBUM PRESENCE DUE MARCH 15 VIA ARTOFFACT RECORDS
SPECTRES are back with another single from their upcoming album, Presence! “Chain Reaction” takes listeners back to early Spectres releases β channeling their punk roots, the song recalls the band’s earlier, more aggressive material.
“There are open nods to the Southern California sounds of Rikk Agnew and the Adolescents’ darker material, combined with Spectres classic post-punk aesthetic,” vocalist Brian Gustavson says, commenting on “Chain Reaction”. Elaborating that, “The track wouldn’t sound out of place on a 1980s Thrasher video compilation.
This past November, the band announced a new album on the way and has shared two singles β “The Old Regime” and “AM Gold” to rave recognition. The new album, Presence, will drop on March 15th, 2024 via Toronto’s Artoffact Records and is a widely anticipated follow-up to 2021’s Hindsight.
Sonically leaning into the band’s pop and shoegaze influences, but leaving ample room for their post punk roots to shine through, the album’s singles are sure to get the band’s longstanding fanbase itching to find out what the next single has in store for them and draw in new listeners.
For nearly two decades, Spectres have been at the forefront of the post punk genre resurgence and are commonly cited as kicking off the renewed interest. Emerging from the DIY Punk underground in 2005, the band’s vocalist and founder Brian Gustavson wanted to blend the grassroots and independent ethic of anarcho-punk with the anomie and cold, modulated sounds of 1980βs post punk and death rock and though the bandβs output has matured with time to embrace a wider range of new-wave and shoegaze influences their ethos remains rooted in anarcho punk.
The blending of these influences allows for the curious juxtaposition of 80βs influenced pop sensibilities with lyrics that explore the alienation and cynicism of modern life and the search for hope in an increasingly terrifying world. One of the bandβs core strengths is its sonic aesthetic, which ranges from brooding and confrontational dark punk to ethereal pop influenced dance anthems. Spectresβ live show harkens back to their punk origins bringing a direct and aggressive approach to their performances intended to convey a feeling of estrangement and urgency to the audience. After working with several different DIY labels over their first 12 years as a band Spectres signed with Artoffact records in the summer of 2018 and is looking forward to releasing another album with the label.
