POINT BREAK 2 (MEMBERS OF THESE ARE POWERS/BEAR IN HEAVEN) RELEASE NEW SINGLE & VIDEO “HAUNTED CAR”
NATURALLY RECORDS
Point Break 2 is excited to share their new single and its accompanying music video, “Haunted Car.” The song debuted today at Magnet Magazine and is on all streaming platforms for playlist shares. On the track, the band’s Ted McGrath says, “The song was inspired by a late-night, midsummer trip to the ER after a bike wreck here in NYC, kinda the experience of being hazily conveyed to and fro in some rideshare cabs. I originally wrote the tune thinking it would be a small, quiet interstitial about finding some optimism and keeping a sense of humor and grace in the face of, well, everything these days, almost kind of a lullaby . . . But once I showed it to the band, it became something much grander, and much better. It’s a blast to play live, and this recording captures Point Break 2 playing like an all-caps BAND. It rips, but there’s a lot of feel in there too.”
The first offering from Spring/Summer ‘26 sessions helmed by Jeff Berner (Psychic TV), “Haunted Car” captures the live intensity of Point Break 2 at the height of their powers. Ted McGrath (vocals/guitar, These Are Powers/The Flag) sings with a new clarity and melodic confidence while sacrificing none of the wit and wordsmithing of previous outings. Lead guitar from Ryan Crozier (The Flag/Fletcher C Johnson Band) cops to the Can/Television playbook, foregoing fretboard pyrotechnics in favor of infectious countermelodies that rival the vocal hooks. And the ace rhythm section of Joe Stickney (drums, Bear In Heaven/ExMazed), and newcomer Tony Hall (bass, Ka-Nives) rides a loose, propulsive groove through tempo changes and girl-group turnarounds. Finally, Jeff Tobias (Sun Watchers, Tiers de la Familia) guests on saxophone, veering from sublime, minimalist understatement to fully unhinged catharsis in a performance that bridges the gap between vintage Andy Mackay and Clarence Clemons.
The Velvets/protopunk/surf rock influences of the band’s first recordings are still right there, but “Haunted Car” expands the palette with nods to art/rock luminaries like Roxy Music, Wire, and the extended Kim Deal songbook. For the video, the band turned to their friends Daniel Bellury and James Gannon, two of the brilliant minds behind the critically-acclaimed short form documentary Wrecked A Buncha Cars, Had A Good Time. The film documents a weekend at an amateur demolition derby, and the filmmakers generously stitched together some unused b-roll into a return trip to the muddy track that beautifully mirrors the narrative and emotional arcs of the song.
