You don’t have to invent (or re-invent) the wheel, in this case, a microphone, guitar or any music related thing for your music to be good a truly listenable. You possibly just need to pick up the right elements and arrange or re-arrange them in a way that suits your fancy but at the same time works for both you and your audience.
The case in point. LA quartet Exploding Flowers and their fourth album Alphabet Window. Yes, you can neatly label this as another addition to the power pop cannon, but the thing is, Sharif Doumani, as the band’s main songwriter and the rest of the crew, obviously have a vast melodic pop rock collection, that ranges from the usual, aka Big Star to a vast selection of close to their home Paisley Underground as well as Flying Nun record selection particularly Clean and The Bats.
Yet, even when you are inspired by others, you have to have a hefty dose of individuality, whether it is smartly re-arranging different elements or using counterpoint between loud and soft, as these guys do throughout this album, and that all makes it so listenable.
