LA-based indie-pop singer-songwriter Maeve Steele has released her latest single “Strangers in the Garden,” a mystical, hypnotically grooving ballad about loneliness and the feeling of being lost even if you feel you have much to be grateful for. With “Strangers in the Garden,” Maeve invites listeners into her expertly crafted and deeply intimate musical world in a way that marks her true promise as a rising artist. Check it out below or HERE.
Maeve collaborated with indie musician Daniel Loumpouridis (co-writer/producer of Louis The Child’s breakout single “It’s Strange (ft. K.Flay)”) on the new track. “Strangers in the Garden” draws comparison between a failing relationship and a withering garden, showcasing Maeve’s masterful storytelling. Against a dreamy piano-driven melody, she poignantly captures the barren feeling of loneliness and being lost. With “Strangers in the Garden,” Maeve utilizes her expertly crafted lyricism and powerful imagery to effortlessly capture her listeners.
“Strangers in the Garden is an ode to the confusing and sometimes self indulgent mess of our mid twenties,” says Maeve. “I found inspiration in Maggie Nelson’s ‘Bluets,’ a book about longing and love in various shades of blue. This felt like my very own bluet; a song about feeling lost amidst so much beauty to be grateful for.”
Influenced by the edgy, ethereal indie-rock of Lana Del Rey and the literary prose of Joan Didion and Maggie Nelson — Maeve self-describes as “Americana-noir.” Through her songwriting expertise, Maeve’s music weaves a tapestry of emotions and intimate experiences. Her unique sound, which draws from the worlds of folk, country, and indie rock, combines deep-rooted storytelling with captivating melodies.
Born and raised in the Bay Area, Maeve developed her voracious musical appetite and distinctive fashion sense at an early age, inspired in large part by the Haight-Ashbury scene of the late 1960s and early 1970s. While her formal introduction to music came through classical violin lessons that began before kindergarten, her family’s home was regularly filled with the sounds of folk, Americana, and country records. Maeve first cut her musical teeth as a session songwriter in Nashville while studying at Vanderbilt University Her creative journey led her to Los Angeles, where she hit the ground running with the release of her popular single “No Control,” and the release of her 2022 EP Overland. Over the years, Maeve has worked with top veteran producers, including the multi-platinum engineer Brian Malouf (Michael Jackson, Madonna).
