This Will Destroy You founding members Jeremy Galindo and Raymond Brown, who left the band to pursue a career in medicine, have reunited to form you, infinite. Joining them on this new and exciting creative project are Ethan Billips, Nicholas Huft, and Johnnie McBryde, all of whom are Galindo’s current touring lineup of This Will Destroy You. Led by uniquely compelling dynamics, gorgeous atmospheres, interestingly vibrant soundscapes, and euphoric instrumentation, the self-titled debut album of you, infinite hits all the right notes.

When I first listened to “Focus On Reflection”. it instantly reminded me of This Will Destroy You’s “The Mighty Rio Grande”. They are very different songs regarding instrumentation and structure, but they do similar things atmospherically and emotionally. Both are anthemic and inspiring, have a bright, gloriously triumphant atmosphere, and convey a sense of hope.

The loud/quiet dynamics interplay and the ever-evolving textures and soundscapes are tremendous. “The Elder” starts out very gritty and explosive, with heavy guitars and thunderous drums. Later on, the song goes in a completely different direction. The instrumentation is a lot more mellow and melancholic, and it has a sort of dream-like quality to it. It flawlessly goes from an electrifyingly bad-ass opening to a gorgeous lullaby with a bit of a pensive quality. Alternatively, the expansive sound of “Throughlines” is stunning. Catchy, soaring, shimmering guitars mixed with peaceful piano, and a comforting atmosphere will put the listener in a trance. Also, it features an epic conclusion that is overwhelmingly cathartic with powerfully mesmerizing guitars and captivating drums. Lastly, “Understated” might be a long track, but enough surprises and compelling things are going on throughout its runtime, resulting in it never being dull.

Other standout songs are “Cutter” and “Shine Eternal”. “Cutter” sounds majestic and is filled with fascinating sounds, the most notable highlights being the exquisite opening and the piano that comes on after the opening which has a sort of Boards Of Canada feel. “Shine Eternal” is electrifying. Fierce, thunderous drumming, hypnotically crisp guitars (that tone is so damn good!) and a kinetic energy blaze through the song. Another impressive thing about “Shine Eternal” is the mixing and production, as it is top-notch.

Overall, the self-titled debut album from you, infinite, is truly magnificent. If you love atmospherically beautiful post-rock or are a fan of This Will Destroy You, then this is the record for you.
