ELEPHANT STONE SINGLE “HISTORY REPEATING” OUT NOW
ALBUM TO BE RELEASED FEBRUARY 23 ON FUZZ CLUB RECORDS
Montreal psych-pop band Elephant Stone are releasing their new single “History Repeating” – the latest to be lifted from their recently announced new album Back Into The Dream. Out February 23rd 2024 on Fuzz Club, the album arrives off the back of a run of packed-out EU/EU tour-dates in September. The latest extract “History Repeating” is a poignant reflection on Canada’s Indigenous history, crafting an evocative plea for acknowledgment and progress.
Talking about the single, Rishi Dhir says: “History has a haunting tendency to repeat itself, from the scars of colonialism to the rise of authoritarian regimes. It’s as if we’re trapped in a loop, forever replaying the same tragedies. “History Repeating” is my way of confronting these harsh realities, particularly as they relate to my home country of Canada, which was built on the deeply troubling foundations of genocide and ethnic cleansing targeted at Indigenous peoples. In recent years, thanks to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the appalling truths about our past have been laid bare, including the discovery of thousands of unmarked graves—a haunting testament to our collective failures. This song serves as an urgent plea: let’s break the cycle. Let’s learn from the darkest chapters of our history to create a more just and compassionate future.”
Dhir, the creative force behind Elephant Stone, has expertly navigated the psych-pop scene for over 14 years. Their discography, laden with introspective lyrics and transcendent musicality touching on loss, grief, and existential crises, deeply resonates with listeners across the globe. The band – featuring Dhir (vocals, bass, sitar) alongside Miles Dupire (drums), Jason Kent (keys, guitar), and Robbie MacArthur (guitar) – have remained unwaveringly dedicated to their distinctive sound and these new songs continue Elephant Stone’s narrative journey and showcase the band’s ever-evolving sound, deftly balancing human complexities with introspective themes.
About Back Into The Dream
Straddling the elusive boundary between the corporeal and the transcendent, Montreal-based Elephant Stone has cemented its reputation as a band deeply invested in probing the contours of dreams and consciousness. Over a 14-year odyssey, their sonic tapestry has evolved into a rich and intricate form of art, capable of capturing the boundless terrain of human emotion and cognition. Set for release on February 23rd, 2024, their upcoming album, Back Into the Dream serves as the ultimate culmination of this musical evolution, offering listeners an entrancing passage through realms of introspection and wonder.
The band’s driving force, Rishi Dhir, has an innate ability to bare his soul through music, plumbing the depths of his vulnerabilities and musings. “I’m often caught in the web of intense, recurring dreams, which I think reflect my ongoing quest for identity and a sense of belonging,” Rishi divulges
Heading the auditory expedition of the album is the track “The Spark”, a compelling invitation to venture beyond the mundane and delve into profound self-exploration. “Even when I’m in conversation, I frequently find my mind wandering to distant places,” Rishi admits. “It’s my own form of escapism, a manifestation of feeling somewhat unmoored in life—emotions that reverberate throughout our latest compositions.”
Back Into the Dream isn’t merely an album; it’s a complex orchestration of emotions, ideas, and existential inquiries. Songs like “Going Underground”, “History Repeating” and the enigmatic ‘bae’ pledge to stir a kaleidoscope of sentiments within the listener. The pre-released singles “Godstar”, “The Imajinary, Nameless Everybody in the World”, and “Lost In A Dream” have already set the tone, amplifying the eagerness for what promises to be a groundbreaking album.
Supplementing Elephant Stone’s signature sitar vibes are echoes of free jazz, especially evident in tracks like ‘Pilgrimage’ and ‘The Imajinary, Nameless Everybody In The World’. This innovative fusion adds another layer to the band’s already diverse musical palette
Rounding out the rich soundscape of Elephant Stone are stalwarts: Miles Dupire on drums, Jason Kent juggling keys and guitar, and Robbie MacArthur on guitar. Together, they ensure that each song—from ‘Pilgrimage’ and ‘On Our Own’ to ‘Another Year Gone’—stands as a testament to Elephant Stone’s constant evolution and their unwavering commitment to musical boundary-pushing.
Centred on the enigma of dreams—whether they’re subconscious murmurings or portals to parallel universes—Back Into the Dream encapsulates the eternal cycle of waking and dreaming. “We’re perpetually oscillating between two realms, trying to comprehend each,” says Rishi. “If our music can serve as a bridge between these worlds, then we’ve accomplished our mission.”
