CHILLED JAZZ FROM DAVE GUY ON THE COMFORTING “I’LL FOLLOW YOU”
BIG CROWN RECORDS
Never found following the crowd, Dave Guy continues to source jazz diamonds ahead of his debut album Ruby. You may best know Dave as the trumpeter playing with Black Thought, Questlove and the rest of The Roots crew – both on tour, in the studio, and on TV with Jimmy Fallon.
After the double header of “Footwork” b/w “Morning Glory”, followed by the hallowed “7th Heaven”, “I’ll Follow You” dexterously sets free horns dipped in honey. Telling you to take a moment for yourself, this is next level jazz chill from the Dap-King and Budos Band man, delicately targeting ears from the first tinkling of daybreak ivories.
Raised in NYC’s East Village, Dave was surrounded by hip-hop and the hustle that defined the city in the ’90s. In those formative days, he and his playing were influenced by jazz greats like Donald Byrd and Hugh Masekela but also by the Native Tongue sounds of A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. His time at LaGuardia Performing Arts High School furthered this path towards playing leading roles in the Dap Kings, the Budos Band and the Menahan Street Band.
