TOM COX – “MAGNETIZED”

A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE

Tom Cox is a musician and songwriter based in Chicago, IL. He got his start as a kid drumming in the battered dive bars in his hometown of Dayton, OH before spending years in Austin, TX where he played in a smattering of bands on the dreamier, psychedelic side of things.

Having been a drummer in most of his prior projects, he took some time away to develop his songwriting style and built a home studio. He put his roots down in Chicago and finished his first full-length album of his own material, Modal Fixture.

His music iterates on the 70s songwriter forms with a garage rock and home recording interpretation, and his music is performed by and arranged with a specific blend of atmosphere and immediacy. His influences include Yo La Tengo, Dr. Dog, and Wilco.

Tom Cox will be out and about performing around Chicago and the greater Midwest in the months to come surrounding his release of debut album Modal Fixture on August 15, 2025. He loves dogs, Lake Michigan, old Wurlitzers, and is spinning Neil Young’s 1975 album Zuma on the regular.

“Magnetized” is about finding connection with another, how alluring, exciting, chaotic, and fleeting it can all be, and how lucky we are to find it when we do. I knew that I still needed a jam that could jumpstart the album and it started around that first chord progression. I came up with the instrumental pretty quickly and threw in a bunch of electronics terms in the lyrics for a laugh. A bunch were left on the cutting room floor, all for good reason. What are you supposed to rhyme “diode” with anyway? ” ~Tom Cox
