SONIC BOOM, TORONTO’S ICONIC INDEPENDENT RECORD STORE, TURNS IT UP FOR INTERNATIONAL RECORD STORE DAY 2026
Music lovers will once again line up in droves as Sonic Boom celebrates International Record Store Day 2026 with more than 250 exclusive releases, spanning genres and generations. Known for drawing crowds around the block in years past, the annual event transforms Toronto’s iconic independent record store into a dynamic, buzzing hub for collectors, crate diggers and casual fans alike.
A cornerstone of the city’s music culture, Sonic Boom plays a defining role in IRSD each year by championing physical media, spotlighting independent artists and fostering a sense of community that extends far beyond its doors. Past celebrations have seen eager fans queue in the early morning hours before the store opens, racing to secure rare pressings and revel in the electric atmosphere that has become synonymous with Sonic Boom’s Record Store Day experience.
Adding to the excitement, Sonic Boom’s 25th anniversary will come on the heels of IRSD, extending the celebratory mood as the store builds up momentum towards the occasion in May. A major milestone for the much beloved retailer, the silver anniversary further cements its legacy within the city’s music scene and its wider cultural fabric.
“Record Store Day started as a way to remind people that record stores are still doing well,” says Jeff Barber, founder and owner of Sonic Boom. “But after almost 25 years in this business, we’re not just surviving, we’re thriving. I can’t say I saw that coming, but man, I’m happy about it.”
As Canada’s largest independent record store, Sonic Boom has spent nearly a quarter-century nurturing Toronto’s music scene — offering not just an unparalleled selection of vinyl, CDs, cassettes and vinyl accessories, but also serving as a gathering space for both artistes and fans. From in-store performances and autograph signings to unforgettable Record Store Day celebrations, Sonic Boom continues to be a cultural touchpoint where music discovery thrives.
