LUCY AND THE RATS – “PILLS”
A Spill Exclusive Musicย Premiere
Lucy Spazzy, formerly of Melbourneโs The Spazzys, is creating a ripple as Lucy and the Rats in London. The Spazzys were twin sisters Kat and Lucy Spazzy with drummer Alice McNamara (Ally Spazzy).
The Spazzys achieved a Top 40 hit in Australia with a cover of the 1963 hit “My Boyfriends Back” from The Angels (the 60s girl-group, not the 70s rock band). Lucy packed up her bass guitar and moved to the grimy streets of London in 2015. Minus her Spazzys she needed some rats and soon found Manu (Thee Tumbitas) for drums and Mike Animal Cannibal and Joe To Lose (Los Perros, Johnny Throttle) for the twin guitar assault.
The self-titled Lucy and the Rats debut album will be released on May 25 worldwide on Dirty Water Records. It was recorded in Denia, Spain by Johnny Casino and Jim Diamond (White Stripes and Dirtbombs) and comes with ten songs and all of them shine brightly with big hooks, jangly guitar lines and the kind of choruses that will be stuck in your mind after just one listen. Lucy and the Rats share the opening track โPillsโ exclusively for The Spill Magazine.
A big part of the bandโs appeal has to be attributed to Lucyโs vocals, delicate and powerful at the same time. Think Blondie, The UKโs Darling Buds and The Primitives or โ more recently โ Best Coast. The spiky garage rock up-and-at-em attitude transmits throughout the record, hearing echoes of everyone from The Pretenders to The Divinyls.
