FINOM, MEG ELSIER & BEAMS
@ THE BABY G, TORONTO
NOVEMBER 7, 2024
What a night for live music in the city of Toronto, and what better way to celebrate than with Music City’s own Meg Elsier, accompanied by the amazing and talented Finom from Chicago, and Toronto’s very own Beams.
Beams packed the stage first with all six members playing pivotal roles in the band’s psych-folk pop sounds. They felt like a family on stage and it showed in their performance giving it a very intimate vibe. It was almost as if you were watching them perform in your living room.
Meg Elsier was up next and jumped right into her set with no intro needed, nearly catching half the crowd off guard. As her set continued, we would soon learn that that is just her personality. She comes off as extremely likable and unapologetically herself, living in her own world, and it is a pleasure to watch her perform. She’s constantly making jokes and laughing at her own expense and you can tell she’s always like this whether she’s playing to five people or 1000. There’s an authenticity and vulnerability to her that you can’t help but appreciate and smile at.
She played a select few songs off her new album spittake, which was released back in June. One of the highlights of the performance was Baby”, which like most of the songs from the album, feels very personal and relatable.
Finom opened their set with a beautiful intimate violin piece performed by Macie Stewart, whose stage presence was very powerful. She wore her emotions on her face throughout the set, and had an aura about her that was impossible to ignore. This was replicated by each band member as you could tell they were all equally passionate about the songs. Drummer Spencer Tweedy was one of the grooviest drummers that has ever sat behind a kit. His style is so smooth, he didn’t need to open his eyes for most of the set.
Finom also put out a record earlier this year called Not God, which they played a number of songs from. The track “Dirt” was a notable one as it builds at such an organic pace to an epic climax and it’s hard not to appreciate the vocal harmonies they’re able to pull off.
Another great show at The Baby G in the books.
