JOCELYN FISKE – ROXY LIVE CURTAIN CALL: ROXY’S 50th ANNIVERSARY TOUR
JOCELYN FISKE PUBLISHING
BOOK REVIEW BY AARON BADGLEY
In 2022, Jocelyn Fiske wrote the definitive history of Roxy Music live performances, both as a band and solo tours. It was an astounding book (Roxy Live: Under Exposed) and a book that she thought would close the door on Roxy Musicβs touring years. However, Roxy Music did the unexpected. They regrouped and launched their 50th Anniversary Tour in 2022, which started in Toronto. The tour took everyone by surprise and was thoroughly enjoyed by fans in North America and the UK. The tour wrapped up on October 14, 2022, at the 02 Arena in London. And to date, Roxy Music has not released a DVD or live album from that tour. It was a brilliant show, with Roxy dipping into their entire catalogue.
This is where Fiske comes in, as she captured some amazing photos during the tour and has put together a brilliant souvenir of that tour. Fiske, herself, in the introduction, says that this book is an extension of Roxy Live: Under Exposed. Again, Fiske has outdone herself with the photos and documentation of the tour. It is an outstanding book covering a very interesting and unexpected tour. Fiske begins her book on September 12, 2022, in New York City and features other concerts. She also captures interesting guests at the shows, such as Richard Butler of The Psychedelic Furs attending a show. Fiske captures live photography that almost produces sound. She captures the energy and the artistry of the band throughout the shows and the end result is an amazing look at one of the most influential bands of all time.
She also documents Brian Enoβs 2023 tour. This was another surprise and unexpected tour, but one that not only sold out but was adored by his legions of fans. Once again, Fiske captures stellar photos of an artist who is not only an icon but someone who developed an entire genre during his career. The show was fantastic, and again, Fiske captures the spirit of the show in her photographs.
Ever the completist, she also covers Sarah Brownβs London show (May 2023). Brown not only has been a touring member of Roxy Music but Simple Minds as well. For this show, she had Bryan Ferryβs previous backing musician Chris Spedding backing her up for her set. Again, Fiske has done an amazing job documenting and photographing what looks to be a wonderful show.
Fiske has come up with another incredible book. It is a continuation of Roxy Live: Under Exposed but clearly stands on its own. The 50th Anniversary Tour looks to be Roxy Musicβs last tour, and thankfully with Roxy Live Curtain Call β Roxyβs 50th Anniversary Tour Fiske has documented an important chapter in Roxy Musicβs history. Fiske is a fan, and this book is a fanβs eye view of an historic tour.
