I’m Going To Break Your Heart: A Rock N Roll Love Story is a fascinating and rather unique book. Chantal Kreviazuk met Raine Maida (lead singer of Our Lady peace) in 1996 (at a Pearl Jam concert), and according to this book, it was love at first sight. Three years later the two were married and have remained so until this day. The couple have three sons. This book, I’m Going To Break Your Heart: A Rock N Roll Love Story, is a collaboration between the two of them discussing their marriage and relationship. It is not a book about their individual careers, although, of course, that is part of their story, but rather this is a straight-ahead love story.

But not so straight ahead. The book is a result of couples therapy the two attended, which forced them to look inward and examine their role in the relationship. Marriage/relationships are not easy. There is work that couples need to do and get through in order to make the marriage successful. Kreviazuk and Maida had and have a very successful union, but there were issues that needed to be attended to for both of them.

The fact that both were hugely successful also plays a part. Their line of work has a lot of perks and is also very unconventional in many ways. They explore that in this book, with humour and honesty. It is interesting to read how they work together, both as contributors to others’ music (such as Avril Lavigne’s massive second album Under My Skin) and in their own careers (their project Moon Vs. Sun). I’m Going To Break Your Heart: A Rock N Roll Love Story draws back the curtain somewhat to see the effort, work and pressures of these career

To be clear, I’m Going To Break Your Heart: A Rock N Roll Love Story is not a book of self-pity. Far from it, but they are open with their thoughts, frustrations, and battles. Add in three children, and life gets very busy and people are easily distracted. This is a great read. In fact, it is really hard to put down. Both are songwriters, and the book reads like a great song, each chapter is like a track off of a duet album. It is kind of an extended Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. This book is very detailed but does have a lyrical and flow to it that makes one want to keep turning pages.

Fans of both Kreviazuk and Maida will get a great deal out of I’m Going To Break Your Heart: A Rock N Roll Love Story, but nonfans will enjoy it as well. It is not about their music, although that factors into the story, it is a very human story. A very well written, extremely readable, memoir.
