Maya Lucia
miss girl world
Independent
New York via Minneapolis artist Maya Lucia has an attitude. It is an attitude that makes her garage-fuelled pop rock truly work, so easily heard on her latest, seven-song EP miss girl world.
Some might discount the importance of attitude in this kind of music, but actually it is the right one that actually makes or breaks this type of music. Take for example “Numb or Something,’ one of the best tracks here. No loudness or brashness, just intriguing chord changes that verge on Modest Mouse-like math rock and some almost detached vocals from Lucia.
Still, she doesn’t stay in one place here, moving about in style and concept, while still remaining recognizable as the same artist, all tied up neatly by some quality lyrics that lift Lucia’s music by a few notches up.
The fire you sense in Lucia’s music doesn’t necessarily turn out to be an open one but one that burns from the inside and that is able to consume any bystander/listener with ease.
