Kidsmoke
A Vision In The Dark
Libertino Records
Welsh quartet Kidsmoke debut their new album, A Vision in the Dark, and at first listen, this gorgeously-layered record is anything but dark. It is a dream pop record with the best elements of Real Estate mixed with Wild Nothing.
“She Takes You Under” is a swirling, orchestrated, beautiful track. Lead singer Lance Williams drives home the line “I’m falling apart” but the song definitely is not. With its beautiful guitar lines, it is a top track on the record.
The band has garnered attention recently with “Take Me To The River” which featured on popular Netflix show “Black Mirror”. This has propelled them to status as indie darlings.
Unlike other “It” bands, Kidsmoke ooze substance and integrity. “Higher” shows their confidence, with looping guitars, vocal harmonies, and super catchy positive lyrics such as “Lift me up to reach the sun”.
“Still Dreams” is their version of a darker song with tremolo/distorted guitar work but as their other songs, it digs itself out of whatever issue the lyrics are working on and finds a shining light.
The album ends with “The Bluest You”. Dealing with depression, it is reportedly the band’s favourite on the record. Even with the darker lyrics and timely theme, it is driving and uplifting. It ends the album by really showcasing who they are as a band, a combination of musical integrity mixed with a positive vibe.
