SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: KEANE – HOPES AND FEARS (20th ANNIVERSARY EDITION)

KEANE
HOPES AND FEARS (20th ANNIVERSARY EDITION)
INTERSCOPE

In the year 2004, picture yourself chilling in your favorite recliner, cracking open a cold brewski, and witnessing Michael Phelps snag his very first victory in Athens, Greece, setting the stage for his impressive haul of six medals. While flipping through channels, you stumble upon the iconic farewell of Sex and the City, the Boston Red Sox nailing the World Series win, and the buzz about some college student starting a mysterious online hangout spot named Facebook after a bad breakup. Eventually, you settle on MTV and get hooked on the fresh sounds of Keane, a rad new band from the UK, belting out tunes from their debut album, Hopes and Fears.

Fast forward to today, and Keane is gearing up to reveal an amazing new edition of that same album. Yes, you read that right! On May 10, 2024 – two decades after its initial release – the fresh LP will be unleashed for eager Keane enthusiasts worldwide. Adding to the excitement on the same day, the band will ignite the stage at London’s 02 Arena, marking the start of a whirlwind global journey that commences in Mexico City on April 1st and waltzes through Europe and the UK. For fans across the pond, the US tour will kick off in September, promising unforgettable shows at iconic venues like the Greek Theatre in LA, Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, and the legendary Radio City Music Hall in the Big Apple.

Keane has one more surprise up their sleeve for fans. Alongside celebrating the 20th Anniversary of their album, Hopes and Fears, they have introduced an exclusive, never-before-heard track called “Love Actually.” This track, a hidden gem in their musical repertoire, is sure to captivate and intrigue fans, adding a new layer of excitement to the album’s re-release.

Now, cast your minds back to the festive season of 2003 when a heartwarming holiday comedy flick named Love Actually hit the screens. Here’s a juicy tidbit for you: Keane actually penned their song, “Love Actually,” specifically for this British rom-com, but shockingly, it never made the final cut. Six months later, the film’s writer and director, Richard Curtis, regretted that dreadful decision after Keane’s album Hopes and Fears went to number one in the UK.

Surprise, surprise! Wait, there’s more! While band member Tom Chaplin beautifully croons the tune “Love Actually,” it is paired with a visually captivating lyric video featuring iconic moments from the film Love Actually. Woah, talk about a double treat! Can you believe it? After all these years, Keane’s beloved song finally makes a grand connection to the Curtis movie. Now, that’s what I call a sweet twist!

Hopes and Fears is not just any album for Keane; it’s a record-breaking masterpiece that has etched its place in the band’s illustrious history. This gem continues to soar, standing tall as one of the top-selling albums in UK chart history, with a whopping 2.5 million copies flying off the shelves in the UK within the first year and a cool million in the USA. Fueled by the everlasting charm of their smash hit “Somewhere Only We Know,” the album has clinched  9 times platinum status in the UK and has crossed the 10 million mark in global sales.

In essence, Hopes and Fears transcends mere musicality; it is a profound exploration of emotion, nostalgia, and the human experience. Each track unfolds like a chapter in a deeply personal story, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in its rich tapestry of sound and sentiment. As the final notes of “Bedshaped” fade away, one thing becomes abundantly clear – this album is a timeless classic that resonates with the soul long after the music stops.
