SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: JR. THOMAS & ERASERHOOD SOUND – JR. THOMAS IN THE ERASERHOOD

Jr. Thomas

JR. THOMAS & ERASERHOOD SOUND
JR. THOMAS IN THE ERASERHOOD
DEEPMATTER RECORDS

Jr. Thomas pairs up with the Eraserhood Sound duo, Maxwell Perla and Vincent John, to bring us their combination of soul music that one cannot help but visualize driving or slow dancing in the dark with lights shimmering around. The album Jr. Thomas in the Eraserhood provides various songs to set the listener in a relaxed state asking for the lullaby to continue going lest you break out of the soul trance. “Thank You Honey” is an optimal start for setting the tone, easing the listener into that mood for soul, so when “Can’t Leave You Alone,” plays with a mildly more intense approach, you are already in melting in the seat to let it wash over you.

“By Your Side” should appear closer to the playlist’s end for its smooth sendoff and feel-good conclusion. However, “Never Be Another” starts just as smooth as “By Your Side” ends, progressively ramping the album back up, until “Waiting For You” brings the album to its climax when it comes to intensity thanks to the chorus now becoming more prominent in the track to further reverberate the song’s namesake. The same energy comes back later in “Life of the Party,” which is personally my favourite of the album.

“Through the Night” is another stunning track that I am glad is placed as the second last song of the album, giving the same feeling of resolution along with, and perhaps even more-so, than “Thank you Honey.” The song has a great finale after many of its highs and lows before simmering down near the end, repeating the phrase “through the night” while song is reaching its conclusion, giving the idea that the party is still going on ‘through that night.’

“One of a Kind” being the final track was a wonderful pick for the album. It keeps that soothing tone as if the party is coming to a close. Unlike “Through the Night” where it sounds as though we are panning away from the song that still seems to be going strong, we instead hear the song’s melodic, softened end to its conclusion, enhancing the finality of the album, “Party’s over it’s been fun!”

Jr. Thomas in the Eraserhood is an album that takes the listener on a lucid trip as they sing of love and good times, reminiscing about that one night, or the one they wish they had.
