SIGUR RÓS
TAKK. . . (20th ANNIVERSARY REMASTER)
KRUNK RECORDS

It was the scorching summer of 1997 in Etobicoke (pronounced eh•tow•bee•ko), ON, when my buddy Grant insisted I had to hear this new, up-and-coming Icelandic band. At the time, I shrugged it off, probably another fleeting recommendation of the ceaseless sonic machine of summer song hits. Little did I know that 28 years later, this band would not only still exist, but continue to captivate listeners, as their music was recomposing the emotional fabric of the decades that followed.
Takk…was Sigur Rós’ 4th album that came out in 2005 and recently got a 20th anniversary remaster. My apologies to bassist Georg Holm, in advance, as I’ve read that he doesn’t really believe in or like album reviews. Sigur Rós’ Takk… (20th Anniversary Remaster) remains a breathtaking journey of sound, blending delicate intimacy. “Glósóli” builds to ecstatic crescendos, while “Hoppípolla” balances childlike wonder with anthemic joy. Tracks like “Sæglópur” drift between fragile reflection and expansive drama, interwoven with luminous, glimmering guitars, hauntingly exquisite vocals, and sweeping, majestic orchestral surges that rise and fall with cinematic grace. The B-sides and previously unreleased tracks, Melrakki’ and ‘Elfur,’ expand the album’s emotional palette, layering brooding piano motifs, ghostly vocal echoes, and delicate, tension-filled instrumental passages that linger long after the songs end. From “Hoppípolla” being featured in David Attenborough’s Planet Earth to sparking viral trends on TikTok, that track exemplifies how Sigur Rós transcends genres, generations, and media, proving their music knows no boundaries. Even two decades later, Takk… feels timeless, full of surreal beauty and quiet triumph, reshaping moments of waking reality in every listen.
In the end, revisiting Takk… is like watching a victory rose bloom in the ether, fragile, glowing, while suspended between silence and revelation, across a vast garden of sound. There are so many moments of beauty and grandeur, where melody and atmosphere entwine, reminding us why this album endures. Each track breathes with slow revelation, petals of melody and silence unfurling into light. Sigur Rós didn’t just craft an album; they cultivated an experience that continues to evolve, quietly reshaping the aural landscape. Two decades on, their music still invites listeners to find their own quiet moments within its luminous expanse.
