Geese is based in New York City. Getting Killed is their fourth studio album and their best. Over the years the band has worked on establishing their own distinct sound. On Getting Killed, they certainly succeeded with that goal. The band writes the music, and they are able to create truly original rock. It is not so much alternative as it is other worldly. Guitars and keyboards clash and the title track is a good example of the many twists and turns the band takes in a single song, never mind an entire album

Lead vocalist Cameron Winter writes the lyrics and although there is no concept or story, there is an overarching theme throughout Getting Killed. Names pop up in several songs and reference other lyrics. Winter does not mince words or paint a lovely picture, quite the opposite, However, it does not make the album depressing, actually it is quite the opposite. Chatting with angels who have wry observations of today’s world, not to mention their own problems, to songs like “Husbands” which takes the listener to bizarre places, but, as he points out in the song, at least he is not lonely.

Songs like “100 Horses” have a deep groove that drives the song, while other songs, such as “Trinidad,” are much more experimental and sparser, slowburning song. Then there are straight ahead rockers throughout. What this does, however, is create an incredible album that never gets boring. I found myself listening and anticipating what they would do next, and the band never lets you down. They come up with a great many surprises.

Overall, an incredible, multi-layered album that not only promises, but delivers a new sound in rock. With Getting Killed, Geese have come up with an exciting album full of original and fascinating sounds. Lyrically, the album takes the listener into some dark areas, but the album does not have a heavy sound. The album Getting Killed shows that Geese are not shying away from anything, and they present their work in a creative and distinct manner. It works on every level. Sure, the world may be on fire, but Geese are not going down with a fight and a great rock album.
