CORROSION OF CONFORMITY
GOOD GOD / BAAD MAN
NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS

Stoner rock and metal are genres that fuse doom metal and psychedelic rock to create subgenres that are groovy while maintaining a slower tempo and distorted feel. Pioneered in the 90s by bands like Sleep, Kyuss and Soundgarden, the ‘stoner’ type of music became a staple in the alternative scene, continuing on in music today. Corrosion of Conformity falls under many subgenres, however, their most recent release, Good God / Baad Man, is undeniably at least part of the stoner rock and metal category.
“Good God? / Final Dawn’s” first notes draw the listener in with a false sense of security with an acoustic-like sound, before jumping quickly into guitars from Woody Weatherman and drums from Stanton Moore that surprise and please the ear. “Gimme Some Moore,” one of the singles from this album, has a faster tempo but the catchiness of the chorus definitely makes it one of the more fun songs to listen to on this album. Moore’s drums make the listener want to headbang throughout the entire track, and the punchy vocals from Pepper Keenan are a highlight to this single.
While the album definitely has a lot of highs, the downfalls often come when listening to the album in order. “You Or Me,” while having an amazing second act, begins sounding very similar to the previous track. The guitars from Weatherman often come across as uninteresting or same-y, and the music can often muddle together. This issue is spread occasionally throughout the entire album, however, it doesn’t affect every song.
Overall, fans of the band will likely have a great time listening to this release. The highlight of this album is Moore’s drums. After having not played with the band for 21 years, Moore’s return was definitely a pleasant one. This album shows a slight change in the musical direction of the band, going for less of a sludge metal vibe to going more for the stoner metal feel. The change is a welcome one, and Good God / Baad Man is an album worth checking out.
