CJ WILEY RELEASES NEW EP JUST CAN’T QUIT
THE ORCHARD
CJ Wiley has released their new EP, Just Can’t Quit; a collection of songs that reflects the phases of relationships: the cycle of having a crush, falling in love, making a commitment, and breaking up.
The EP unpacks what it’s like to fall in love and keep going back for more no matter how many times love kicks your ass. Like some beautiful masochistic ritual we can’t get enough of. Every love is different. Hits different, hurts different.
Just Can’t Quit “captures the idea that no matter how many times love kicks our ass, we always go back for more. Like some beautiful masochistic ritual, we can’t get enough of it,” explains Wiley. “Every love is different. Hits different, hurts different. The truth is I was falling in love while making this record and heartbroken by the end, so these songs are a true reflection of that entire arc.”
“fluke” is a song for the initial crush. While “backporch” is about the honeymoon period and trying to slow it down to just share a moment of bliss. “pet” is about the vulnerabilities of fully committing to another person and still craving affection despite both your flaws.
The last song on the EP, “wasp”, talks about how breakups lead to estrangement, and when there’s no contact, things feel like it’s all rupture and no repair.
“I wrote ‘wasp’ about no contact, estrangement, and the complicated guilt that comes with stepping away from family,” says Wiley. “There’s so much pressure to forgive, make peace, and move on. I understand why people choose that, but I’m not there yet. I still need a little more time.
“In turn, I’ve felt these themes closely while navigating my most recent breakup. The one person you’re going through that thing with is the person you can’t talk to about it. There’s something so uniquely painful about that. When it’s all rupture and no repair, you can’t help but feel the sting.
