AVI C. ENGEL
NOCTURNE (SOUNDTRACK FOR AN INVISIBLE FILM)
ELEPHANT SHREW EDITIONS
Toronto’s Avi C. Engel is on a serious release streak. They already have a serious set of singles, EPs and albums under their belt, and after the Bestiary EP from November 2024, Nocturne (Soundtrack For An Invisible Film).
Sticking to their motto: “I’m not writing the same song over and over so much as writing one long continuous song that will end when I die,” Engel takes another deep dive into the dark side of things, in this case, as the title indicates, all things connected to night.
” I started recording Nocturne during a spell of sleeplessness and depression and finished as I was emerging from it. It began as an attempt to soothe my own mind, and I share it with the hope that it might soothe other minds as well, or at least offer an interesting distraction.”
It is a set of free-flowing improvisations that recreate the state of mind they describe, using a series of usual and not so usual instrumentation, and again, that is a concept that works so well for Engel, here, and elsewhere in their output.
