American Grandma and its new album Rare Knives Of Light, is more strong proof that there is slowcore revival going on. Now, don’t just revisit those Codeine or Bark Psychosis albums, picking up on this Denver, CO trio, just might do the trick.

Yet, Jensen Keller, the band’s songwriter and vocalist and his buddies are not just inspired by the 90s heyday of that sound, but they have the knack of adding elements of more current shoegaze and post-rock developments to their brew.

At times, American Grandma harks to the best work by not only the two above-named bands but also some other more subtle and complex purveyors of such sound like Labradford or Slint.

And while such influences come up as snippets throughout the eight tracks here, American Grandma seems to be developing something of its own sound and approach to slowcore, which along with Keller’s intriguing lyrics makes the take on its genre quite interesting.
