SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: NICO PAULO – NICO PAULO

It might be a strange choice for some to exchange the milder climes of Portugal for Newfoundland, but for singer songwriter Nico Paulo, that just might have been the right thing to do to come up with some excellent music on her debut, self-titled album. Yes, Paulo does fall into that singer songwriter category, that often comes up when artists fall into the trap of so-called ‘navel gazing,’ but Paulo certainly does not succumb to that disease here.

She presents some mature, sophisticated songwriting skills and has a voice that can carry such music. To be able to make such music work, Paulo has to touch base with a number of other genres than just ‘simple’ solo artist balladry, and turn to some more complex arrangements, both of those on full show here, with tracks like “Time”, “Love Me Inside”, or “Now or Never” being very good examples of that.

Hopefully, there’s more to come of this quality from Nico Paulo.
