It has been seven years since the last studio album from Delerium, Mythologie) The band has returned with a new album, Signs, and the time between albums seems to have done them well. Delirium has delivered a very unique and fresh sounding album full of surprises. Once again, they work with a variety of singers and styles throughout the album, and as a result they have produced a very coherent and consistent album with many twists and turns. Signs is an album that is very chill and relaxed and yet has a strong energy coming from the groves and layered sound. Delerium continues to centre around Bill Leeb (Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly) and Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly). People who expect Delerium to be an extension of Front Line Assembly will be disappointed or surprised. But fans of this group will know that Signs is the logical progression of this duo.
The album opens with “Falling Back To You” featuring Mimi Page. This is a beautiful introduction to the album. The layered synths and electronics mixed with her vocals is stunning. This is followed by “Rain”, an almost ambient song with backwards vocals and music. It is fascinating. “Coast To Coast”, features Phildel, who has a wonderful voice and “Coast To Coast” is a slow burn of a song, with some heavy beats, so the ambient piece after is the perfect way to cool down.
Inna Walters provides beautiful vocals for the wonderful “Streetcar” while Emily Haines (from Metric) steps up to the microphone for “Glimmer (Delerium Remix)”. “Glimmer” is not a new song, and the original version can be found on Delerium’s Rarities & B-sides album. Kanga also provides a strong vocal performance with “In The Deep”. All the songs fit together with more ambient pieces, and the end result is a very blissful listening experience. By the end of the album, Delirium increases the volume and intensity of the music. “The Astonomer” is a powerful piece that leads into the closing track “Absolution”. Mimi Page ends the album, which is brilliant, given her vocals grace the opening track.
And with that Signs comes to a conclusion. Delirium has come up with an incredible album. It may have taken a while for it to get here, but it was worth the wait. Signs is full of wonderful layered sounds. It is a strong album that can best be described as intensely chill. Fans should enjoy it and Signs may even gain the band new found fans.
