THE MARY VEILS – “ESOTERIC HEX”
A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE
Philly garage-rock outfit The Mary Veils are back with βEsoteric Hex,β the final single off their forthcoming album of the same name (due March 25 via PNKSLM Records).
Speaking on this new single, frontman Brian Vonn Uff wrote:
“The band and I moved to my old studio space in these historic mills from the 1600βs that the Swedes built. The idea for the album and name came to me while in this space. When I was younger, my friend lived on Mill Street and there was an older woman who would collect animal bones and claimed to be a witch. She told us she put a hex on us for climbing in her tree. Since our music isnβt for everyone and we are forever cursedβ¦or not, we named the song and album Esoteric Hex. This song came together to us on Mill Street, in this space. It has a very hypnotic spell-like vibe and it fit perfectly.”
Taking their cues from the classic punk of New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders and The Dickies, as well as more contemporary influences like Osees and Hot Snakes, The Mary Veilsβ musical DNA is one rooted deeply in the intersection between riffery and melody.; The album walks a tightrope between the rock and roll fizz of opener “Bone Blossom Green” or the spiraling guitar scuzz of “A Tether,” and the psych-tinged, hook-driven likes of “Circled Omens” and “Fuzzy.” At the centre of what makes Esoteric Hex tick, though, is the bandβs hometown itself; as Von Uff explains, this is a love letter to Philly.
Esoteric Hex is due March 25 via PNKSLM Records. The title track βEsoteric Hexβ is out tomorrow via all DSPS.
