Abby Huston
AH HA
Egghunt Records
Richmond, VA producer/songwriter Abby Huston just came up with the AH HA, a genre-bending pop album that is a promise in itself. Huston wraps their somewhat moody lyrics into seemingly sweet and gentle melodies and then adds trip-hoppy electronics and jazzy brass throughout the album to give it quite a distinctive feel and sound.
Backed by their old collaborator Cameron Smith and a band comprising Hustonβs local Richmond collaborator, Huston weaves a sound that is at the same time familiar and unique, rising above any possible pop or lo-fi traps that might crop up along the way.
On “Promise,” “Unrequited”, and “Lillies” they even bring a refreshing touch of good old sixties soul, of course spiced up with their trip hop toppings. Yet, throughout the album it is Huston’s clear creativity that gives the album its full individuality and specific sound that takes AH HA a notch higher. Oh, and AH HA is not just a simple (wry) realization/smile, but a youth memory. Their initials were engraved on their first pair of drumsticks.
