TRANSCENDENCE, ASHES AND KRAMPUS
A CONVERSATION WITH MISS FD
Miss FD exploded on the electronic dance scene in 2009. She writes, produces and performs her own style of electronic music, which is not only unique but also very original. Her debut album was released in 2010 (Monsters In The Industry). Since then three albums have followed, with her most recent, Transcendence being released in 2018. Each album has its own distinct sound and style, and since 2009 she has grown and developed her own sound. I had the chance to put some questions to Miss FD, she explains how her work has changed during the last eight years.
“For Transcendence, I drastically changed my production process to create something that sounded new to me. Instead of focusing on the full production of the instrumental tracks first, then recording the vocals after the instrumental production was complete, which is how I’ve produced most of my previous works, for Transcendence I first composed five of the seven structures just on piano. I recorded completely clean vocals over the piano skeletons to better focus my vocal performance, then returned to decide on a specific production method for each of the tracks around the vocal performance. This allowed me to create a much more organic album than with any of my previous releases.”
PURCHASE “ASHES OF STARS”
In October she released a single, “Ashes Of Stars” in October, 2018 which was not included on Transcendence.
“The songs in my albums all work together to tell a bigger story from beginning to end.
The themes within Transcendence delve into accepting emotions as unique experiences that forge personal growth, even through pain and unpleasantness. I believe an imperative of emotional health is to acknowledge your emotions instead of attempting to deny or suppress them, as the starting point for healing. Introspection, in order to acknowledge, understand, accept, and finally release your emotions towards healing through awareness, allows for true spiritual transcendence, versus a negative sinking path of suppression and repression that does not aim to understand the root of personal emotional suffering through genuine heart-searching and self-examination.
“Thematically, “Ashes of Stars” is the beginning of a new chapter, it’s the rebirth of inspiration, it’s the awakening of new-found optimism and a desire to move forward with the type of positive outlook that arises from acceptance, and healing from darkness within.”
She also worked with Vulture Culture on the single.
“I met Alex of Vulture Culture a few years ago. He was formerly a DJ and event organizer for the South Florida music scene, and he invited me to play at a couple of his events. Alex was already very familiar with my own music when I learned about his own music project and I loved his production style. I felt that he already really understood my own music, which made me feel very comfortable, as I knew I would be able to trust him to work with me on pieces to bring his own take on the production, while still keeping the style of the music very close to my own.”
PURCHASE “KRAMPUS SONG”
Even more recently, Miss FD has written and produced a song for Christmas, but in true Miss FD style, it has a very unique spin on the traditional Christmas record. The song is called “Krampus Song”.
“I absolutely love the story of the Krampus terrifying misbehaved children! I found myself wishing that there was a good Krampus themed song in the more traditional style of classic Christmas songs. I couldn’t find one, so I decided to make one!
“Krampus Song” was incredibly fun to write and produce. This song once again allowed me to explore a completely new style of writing and production, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It further pushed me to continue on the path of recording live instrument performances that capture a much more human touch, as opposed to the more heavily edited fully electronic productions I’m accustomed to.”
And the new single was a little bit of a family collaboration.
“For this song I again invited Robert Dante to contribute with a piano performance in order to capture a very jazzy inspired vibe. This was also the first one of my songs in which I had the opportunity to invite my own father to contribute with an accordion performance!”
Miss FD is a talented, original artist who produces thought-provoking, stylish, wonderful electronic dance music. Sure, some of it may be dark, but that does not deter from the beauty of the music. Miss FD has admirable goals for her music and her career.
“Connection and comfort. For me, sharing my work is a form of creating a connection, even if indirectly, with someone who may not otherwise feel like there’s anyone else out there who can understand how they are feeling. If I can somehow, by sharing my own feelings and experiences reach someone who may be feeling completely alone in their current experience of life, and let them know through my music that someone else has also felt the way they do, and that you can still take feelings of despair, sadness, and isolation and turn them into something meaningful that may be helpful for someone else, that means the world to me.”
