Foxxxy Mulder, a long-distance collaborative project between Kori Hensell and David Kumler, will release their debut LP,ย Heretic, on September 21. Drawing heavily on early post-punk and dream pop,ย Hereticย covers a broad, yet distinctly unified, range of emotional and sonic territory. After two years of evolving, developing, and refocusing, this release represents a honing of Foxxxy Mulderโs dynamic, full-bodied sound, a sound that bends and transforms throughoutย Hereticโs eight eclectic tracks. From the brooding, dreamy slow-burn of โEverything in Bloomโ to the chaotic barrage of noise that closes โThe Witch,โ Heretic is best listened to in a single sitting.ย A follow up to their 2017 EP,ย Premarital Hex, the record represents the duoโs most mature, developed, and cohesive release to date.
Lyrically, the album fluctuates between the scathing and the melancholic, focusing its criticisms on contemporary social and political realities as well as their historical lineages. Inspired in part by the history of witch persecutions and in part by the disasters of contemporary politics, Heretic is a record about the horrors of the past which, both obliquely and explicitly, continue to haunt the present. The record responds to a world where the ravages of global capitalism appear to have no end, where the banality of sexism has allowed unapologetic abusers of women into the highest political offices, and where racism and hatred are treated as positions to be debated and considered rather than condemned. But Heretic also reflects a dream of becoming the horror that terrifies the powers that be, a specter of a different world that haunts them in their sleep.
Heretic releases on vinyl, cassette, and digital formats on September 21.
