NYC’S SMUSH DEBUT DREAMY NEW VIDEO FOR SHOEGAZE REWORKING OF NORAH JONES’ “DON’T KNOW WHY” | NEW COVERS EP STANDARDS OUT FEBRUARY 20
INDEPENDENT
smush, the Brooklyn-based duo of Emily Borrowman (bass/vocals) and Atley King (guitars), have shared a new video for their stunning shoegaze reworking of Norah Jones’ timeless single “Don’t Know Why” from their forthcoming covers EP standards due out this Friday, February 20th. The self-directed video filmed throughout New York City serves as an homage to the love the married duo share for each other. “We made this video in the same way we make everything else: together. Like the song it’s for, it captures the longing we share for each other,” smush explains. “For the two of us, these creative moments we find ourselves in serve as love letters of special times shared. By offering a look into our world, we hope that it inspires others to find and forge deep and meaningful connections that become transformative to their experience. Though the song and video share a slightly melancholic undertone, what it highlights is the true value and importance of having people in your life that you care deeply about and keep close.”
Later this week, smush will kick off a winter tour with shoegaze trio Daundry at Brooklyn’s Union Pool (Thursday, 2/19); a full itinerary is below, and tickets are on sale HERE. A curated blend of the duo’s DIY indie instincts alongside more unexpected selections, the self-produced EP features mixing by Sonny Diperri, whose work includes production for DIIV and Julie, and who has worked as an in-house engineer for Trent Reznor, My Bloody Valentine, M83, David Longstreth, and more. Alongside “Don’t Know Why,” which has earned early praise and support via Alternative Press (A-Sides, Best Songs of Week), Consequence (Best Songs of the Week), Sirius XMU’s Download 15, Spotify’s Shoegaze Now playlist, Earmilk, Cover Me (Best January Covers), and more, standards also features covers of Hotline TNT, Retail Drugs, Field Medic, Big Rig, and Owl City’s massive hit “Fireflies.” The standards EP is available for pre-order HERE and at DSPS HERE.
smush emerged from the shoegaze underground with their 2024 debut LP, if you were here i’d be home now, earning early word of mouth for their sweeping wall of sound that feels both seasoned and new. The Canadian duo originally met in Vancouver, BC, before relocating to Brooklyn, where they quickly embedded themselves in the local scene once some visa hurdles were cleared. Channeling the more intimate corners of indie rock, the music of smush is driven by curiosity, exploration, and texture. Their lyrics blend rural introspection, urban life, and a surreal fantasy space populated by fairies, vampires, and unicorns. Grounded yet elusive, the duo lean into imperfection at a time when artificial polish dominates, while their live shows mirror the hypnotic pull of their recordings–often converting first-time listeners into die-hard fans.
